Why NeuroGraphica doesn't begin with dreams

NeuroGraphica offers templates for dreams, goals, relationships and much more. So why do most people begin with frustration? The answer reveals something important about how change actually happens.

Why not start with dreams?

If you've browsed a list of NeuroGraphica workshops, you may have noticed something curious.

There are templates for dreams, goals, relationships, communication, identity, creativity, decision-making and much more. So why do most people begin with the Algorithm for Removing Limitations (ARL)? Why not start with dreams?

After all, dreams are usually more appealing than frustrations. Wouldn't it be more inspiring to begin by focusing on what we want?

The answer lies in the difference between having a destination and being able to move towards it.

Before building comes clearing

Imagine wanting to build a house. You may have beautiful plans. You may know exactly what you want it to look like. You may even have a vivid picture of how it will feel to live there.

But if the site is cluttered, overgrown or obstructed, it will be difficult to begin construction.

Before building comes clearing. Not because clearing the site is the goal. Because it creates the conditions in which the goal becomes possible.

Before building comes clearing.

In a similar way, NeuroGraphica often begins by working with whatever currently feels frustrating, stuck or constrained.

Not because frustration deserves centre stage. And not because NeuroGraphica is primarily about solving problems. Rather, because frustration has a way of narrowing our attention.

When we feel hemmed in by a situation, we tend to focus on obstacles, limitations and what isn't working. We become preoccupied with the walls of the maze and lose sight of the wider landscape.

Before we can build something new, it helps to recover a sense of space. This is the role of ARL.

The doorway into NeuroGraphica

The Algorithm for Removing Limitations is designed to help us move from a feeling of stuckness towards greater freedom of movement.

People often describe leaving an ARL session with a different perspective on the situation they brought. Not necessarily because the external circumstances have changed, but because their relationship to those circumstances has shifted.

They can see more. And when we can see more, we usually have more choices.

This is why ARL is often the first NeuroGraphica process people encounter. It is not the destination. It is the doorway.

Beyond it lie many other templates and possibilities: dreams, relationships, communication, identity, creativity, purpose and much more.

But first, it helps to create a little space.
